In this tutorial we will create a nice poster that you could use to promote a summer event. We will use layer blending options, textures and free vectors. The overlayed paper texture gives to the ended work a retro effect. As always you can download the psd file at the end of the tutorial.
Take a look at the final result:
Final image result:

Step 1 – Background
Download the image of a beach. I have founded this free image from stock.xchng. Now open a 600×400 document and paste in the image. At first we need to “eliminate” the two people that go swimming. Simply zoom in and select the Patch tool. Make a selection of the person and drag this selection to the right. Use the same technique with the other swimmer.

The image need more contrast, so click ctrl+M to open the curve tool and set the options as shown in the screenshot. Also select the Blur tool and paint the edges of the background with a large, soft brush.

Step 2 – Deejay
Download the image of a deejay. I have searched for a free image, but they were all lame…so I have download the image of a cooool dj from istockphoto. Paste your image into the canvas. I have decided to mask the hair of my deejay. So use the pen tool to select the hair, click ctrl+Enter to enable the selection tool and click alt+add vector mask. I have hided the hair because I’m going to use vectors to substitute them.

Step 3 – Cartoon style
I want to give to the deejay a bit of cartoon style. So duplicate the layer and switch the layer blend mode to overlay with opacity 75%. Now apply the Cotout filter (Filter>Artistic>Cotout) with the following options:
- Number of levels 4
- Edge simplicity 1
- Edge fidelity 1

Step 4 – Vectors
Download this free amazing vector pack from qvectors. We have to use these vectors to ornate the deejay, so lets you imagination to go and place the vectors wherever you want. In particular, I have used some vectors to replace the hair of the deejay.

Step 5 – Text
Now we can add some text to our image. At first I have created a brown rectangle (#42240f) using the rectangle tool and I have switched the layer blend mode to Linear burn. Then I have used the free Bleeding Cowboys font to write “summer compilation vol 1″.

Step 6 – Texture
To complete the work, download a paper texture and paste it into the canvas. Set the layer blend mode to overlay with opacity 70%. Finished! Hope you have liked this tutorials.
