Grindhouse Inspired Poster design in Photoshop

In this tutorial we will create a poster design inspired by Grindhouse, the film directed by Quentin Tarantino. We will use in particular photoshop filters and layer blending modes. Let’s start!

Files you need :

  1. Desert Road image
  2. Old Style Paper image
  3. Car image
  4. Sexy Girls Vectors from vecteezy realized by Dezignus
  5. Skull Vector from qvectors realized by PalmateerDesign

Step1

Create a new document 600×400 and past in the “desert road image”.

img1

Step 2

Apply the Dark Stroke Filter to obtain a darker image.

Filter>Brush Strokes>Dark Strokes with the following settings:

  • Balance : 5
  • Black Intensity: 4
  • White Intensity: 3

img2

Step 3

Make sure to have black as foreground color ad select the Quick Mask tool. Now use a soft brush to color the road as shown below. The red colored part you’ll obtain is the one that you want to protect from next adjustments.

img3

Step 4

Click on Quick Mask button again: we have selected the sky. Now go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation and set the lightness level to -80

img4

Step 5

Create a new layer and use a large soft brush to color the selection with red (#B2171B) and switch the layer blending mode to “color”. Title this layer “red”

img5

Step 6

Select the Ellipse Tool and drawn a circle (that will be the moon). Choose white as foreground color.

img6

Step 7

Ctrl-click on the “red” layer to select its pixels. Go to Select>Inverse. Now select the ellipse layer and delete the selection by pressing canc (you have to rasterize the layer before: right-click on the layer>Rasterize Layer). Now I’ve decided to change the moon’s color. So right-click on the layer and choose Blending Options>Color Overlay and select this yellow #F1F2Ba

img7

Step 8

Paste in the old style paper above all the layers and change the layer blend mode to overlay with opacity 75%

img8

Step 9

Select the moon layer and apply a gaussian filter

Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur with a radius of 2,5 pixels

img9

Step 10

Paste in the image of the car

img10

Step 11

Lets transform the car style: at first desaturate the image (image>adjustment>desaturate), then apply levels and curves (image>adjustment>levels/curves). Settings are the ones shown in the image:

img11

Step 12

To add a comic style, duplicate the image of the car, select filter>brush strokes>ink outlines with these settings:

  • Stroke lenght 4
  • Dark intensity 15
  • light intensity 35

Set the opacity of this layer on 60%

img12

Step 13

Create a new layer below the car’s one and use a soft black brush to add the shadow to the car as shown in the following image:

img13

Step 14

Draw a circle with the ellipse tool with #FaF6bb as foreground color and use this circle to cover the headlamp of the car. Rasterize this layer and apply a gaussian filter with a radius of 6px. Duplicate this layer and collocate the light effect to the other headlamp.

img14

Step 15

Now create a greater circle in an upper layer and apply again the gaussian filter with a radius of 50px. Duplicate this layer to have a stronger light effect. Use the same technique with the other headlamp.

img15

Step 16

At this point I’ve decided to desaturate the background…I think it makes the image cooler

img16

Step 17

In conclusion I’ve collocated the sexy girls vectors and the skull vector to the backgound. Finished!

Great. But that’s a really gay car. I mean, the Grindhouse cars were a 70 Nova and a 69 Charger respectably. Couldn’t you at least have used one of those, or even a Dart for Christ sakes. And yes I’m fully aware the poster used a 68 Camaro, which doesn’t make much sense.

The headlights really are an amazing effect – it brings a touch of reality to a comic book background, a nice touch. Using a movie as inspiration for a poster design is a great idea and very do-able when using photoshop as demonstrated above. Anyone advertising for an event or even a company advertising a new product line could create powerful posters based on a movie, and would capture attention much more easily than when using a standard poster layout. Large blocks of consistent color such as the large moon or red sky in this design are perfect for placing a headline and other information.
